5 Amazing Dorm Hacks Every College Student Should Know 2022

January 4, 2022

College may be the best years of your life, but living in a dorm room is definitely tougher than it sounds! Not only are there strict rules to follow, but you’ll also have to make do with minimal space and strange layouts.

If you want to turn your college dorm room into a cozy home away from home, then we’ve gathered a few cool hacks for you to try out.

Here are a five amazing dorm hacks that every college student should know about this 2021.

1. Organize cables with binder clips

Charger Cables

From laptops to phones and tablets, you’re most likely going to bring several electronic devices to college. Unfortunately, though, many dorm rooms are equipped with only a single outlet, which means that your cables are bound to get messy and tangled up with each other, forcing you to dig through them to find the one that you actually need.

Solving this problem is as easy as attaching binder clips to the side of your desk. By threading the cable through its handles, you’ll be able to keep them accessible and organized at all times.

2. Create more closet space with soda tabs

Closet Space

Moving into a dorm room means having to make do with a closet so small, you won’t have enough space to fit all your clothes. It can be tempting to buy storage boxes but if you’re sticking to a tight budget or want to upcycle, then soda tabs will be your best option.

To do this hack, simply slide the soda tab over the top of a clothes hanger. Its second hole creates a secondary hook for you to hang more clothes from, giving you more closet space without eating up too much of your budget.

3. Maximize the use of shower caddies

Messy Desk

For most college students, shower caddies are non-negotiable. However, these shouldn’t be restricted to just holding your toiletries and other bathroom necessities. Rather, they can also be used to de-clutter your desk, freeing up space for you to do some actual studying.

Take a second shower caddy and hang it up by your desk. This can hold notebooks, pens, post-its, and whatever else that you don’t want lying around.

4. Use an old bedsheet for a wall tapestry

Wall Tapestry

Tapestries are often used to decorate college dorms but these tend to be expensive and hard to find. However, if you still want to hide your room’s plain walls then repurposing an old bedsheet will work just as well, especially if its design is pretty enough for you to want to stare at it every day.

Upcycling a bedsheet into a beautiful wall tapestry is easy and there are loads of tutorials online that will teach you how to do so. If you can’t find one, though, then you can also opt for peel-and-stick wallpapers, which are perfectly in line with the usual college dorm rules. Just check with your school that wall decorations are allowed, and their recommended way of hanging them.

5. Repurpose old Christmas lights

String Lights

Besides bedsheets, you can also repurpose Christmas lights for your college dorm room, most of which come with only a single light fixture. Understandably, many students regard this as an inadequate source of light, especially if the bulb is either too dim or extremely bright.

If you want a prettier light source for your dorm, then bringing old Christmas lights from home is a great and cost-effective option. It’s easy to string these up and the end result will have your room looking as pretty as a postcard! Don’t forget to double-check with your school to make sure they allow it.
